Staying Healthy And Fit In College

Your experience living at your college or university may be one of the best times of your life! You'll be living in an exciting community filled with new people, cultural events, and intellectual discovery. You'll likely enjoy the independence of being away from home for the first time. It is important, however, to take care of yourself properly while living on campus. Freshmen often experience weight gain and other issues from falling into poor health habits. If you are conscientious, you avoid unsound nutritional practices and use college as an opportunity to build lifelong healthy habits.

You may have heard of "the freshman fifteen," or the fifteen pounds of weight gain experienced by college freshman. In fact, this is generally a myth. It is common, however, for freshman to gain a few pounds during their first year of college, and this pattern of weight gain often continues throughout the rest of college. While you may not gain fifteen pounds in your first year of college, you may gain this weight gradually over four years of bad habits.

One of the culprits of college weight gain is cafeteria food. Most campus cafeterias offer healthy options, but there are also many high-fat, high-sodium choices that often overshadow the salads and vegetables. While food items like French fries and greasy hamburgers are best eaten sparingly for a treat, you may even end up eating this junk food at every meal if you do not make careful choices. If you find that your cafeteria has too few healthy options, let your college know about your concerns.

It is a good idea to supplement cafeteria food with some groceries of your own. If you buy fresh fruit, cereals, salad, and healthy sandwich ingredients, you can eat some healthy meals in your own room. If you go to the cafeteria, choose lean options and eat lots of vegetables. Items such as French fries should be eaten no more than once or twice per week.

Drinking too much soda or sugary beverages is a common pitfall for many college students. Without a parent around to curb your beverage consumption, you may reach for high-calorie drinks more frequently. After late nights, you may also rely on energy drinks or high-fat coffee drinks to get you through your early morning classes. Remember that most of your beverages should be unsweetened, such as water. You can drink moderate amounts of fruit juices, milk, and other healthy beverages. Drinks with little nutritional value should be consumed sparingly.

Another major culprit for college students is excessive alcohol consumption. Besides the other health problems associated with alcohol overindulgence, you will likely experience weight gain from these high-calorie drinks. If you are of a legal drinking age, limit yourself to one or two drinks on each weekend night. Choose healthier options such as wine instead of a cocktail that may be high in sugar.

Finally, use your campus fitness center! Many college students develop sedentary habits which are hard to break. Your campus fitness center likely offers intramural sports, free fitness classes, and a pool, so you can have fun while exercising!

Where To Find Medical Secretary Jobs In Canada - Colleges

The best place to look for Medical Secretary or Medical Office Administration jobs would be the internet. Most employers that you would be working for, be it hospitals or small offices, are computerized and now post all available jobs online.

Some websites to browse for Medical Secretary job listings and to post your resume would be:

workopolis.com
monster.ca
jobbank.ca
jobboom.com

You should Google your job search and check as many websites and job listings as you feel necessary. Be sure to also check your local online classifieds such as kijiji.ca and craigslist.ca for job postings. It is not recommended to post you resume with your personal information on these sites but you could certainly post a listing giving some basic information about the job you are looking for and your skills without using identifying information.

You can often find Medical Office Administration career listings on hospital specific websites such as uhn.ca (Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital in Toronto, ON), hhsc.ca (made up of six hospitals including McMaster University Hospital and the Children's Hospital, a renowned Cancer Centre, and an Urgent Care Centre all located in Hamilton, ON), stjosham.on.ca (St. Joseph's Hospital, Hamilton, ON), and niagarahealth.on.ca (comprised of seven acute care sites in the Niagara Region of Ontario including the Greater Niagara General Site in Niagara Falls, ON and the Hotel Dieu Hospital in St. Catharines, ON). There are all sorts of listings on sites specific to your province or state so use the web search tool of your choice to hopefully increase the number of jobs available to you.

Do not overlook the classified ads in your local newspapers as well. There are still a few offices that are seriously old school and are not computerized so they do not advertise online. They will only submit a job listing to their local newspaper. These can provide very good leads that you would not find anywhere else and sometimes they are a little less "crowded" for interviews since they are not advertised online and not all applicants take the time or opportunity to further broaden their career options.

Many jobs may be listed as part-time or as a one-year contract or temporary full-time. These are often positions that are available because that office's receptionist is off for a maternity leave. Jobs like this are great for building up your experience that will land you those jobs in the hospitals that will potentially pay you more and have better benefits.

Remember to apply for jobs at local retirement homes and long-term care facilities. With your Medical Secretary training you would also be able to apply for jobs with your local government healthcare office, alternative health offices such as chiropractic or massage or physiotherapy clinics, and insurance companies to name a few examples for you. You have quite a few options available to you if you are looking for something other than a hospital or doctor's office specifically. Although some of these options do not utilize all the skills that you acquired during your Medical Office Administration training, they can certainly be fulfilling careers or just the thing you need to gain some experience to get that next level position in your new career.

If you are ever having difficulties finding employment you could always offer your services on a volunteer basis mostly to gain experience. This also looks appealing to an employer since it shows you are dedicated, ambitious and diligent.

Soccer to Heal Wounds in Afghanistan

One of the biggest challenges in Afghanistan is somewhat self-imposed, you see, we've determined that it's best to "win the hearts and minds of the people" and therefore, we've engaged in a little nation building, with the first step guaranteeing security there; easier said than done with insurgents from Pakistan and Iran, and the ever menacing Taliban amongst various other players and occasional jihadists. There are IEDs, local community betrayals, and people changing sides faster than a game of musical chairs.

So, what should we do; go fly a kite? Well, interestingly enough that might work, but I also have another thought here; Why not build soccer fields? How so you ask. Well, below is a quick run-down of what I have in mind, so let me explain and then let's discuss it.

Phase I

-Have Elders Bless it and Take Partial Credit
-Build Soccer Fields in all Cities/Towns/Villages
-Make them 10 abreast, or two-rows of five
-Use "Kite Power" for lights for night play
-Use "water-from-air" technology to drip irrigate the fields
-Supply nets, goal posts, marking chalk, grass seed, uniforms, etc. (bought in-country)

Phase II

-Supply iPad type tablets to keep score, run the tournaments, schedule, and APPs for practice.
-Use Tech to teach techniques, plays, coaches.
-Athletes to compete must do well in school to play, Elders decide the what level they must reach.
-Teach kids; mining, metallurgy, manufacturing, road building, construction, etc.
-Filming of games, players, posted to YouTube Afghan style.
One day a week - kite contests, where the best flyers come to compete.
Don't give the people hope, show them hope, give them a reason to live their life experience and to love life. That's real change.

Now then, recently I submitted this proposal to a debate team to pitch, which involves future policy makers in the US, along with future military commanders. I was asked what the possible risks would be to such a concept. Yes, there would be some risks, but those risks could turn into benefits too.

Risks:

1.) Taliban condemns soccer play as infidel activity, works to undermine it - could also result in a severe back-lash of community against Taliban
2.) Elders could see it as undermining their authority.

Are you beginning to see why this plan needs to get done, and what wonderful progress can be made in the name of; "winning hearts and minds" in Afghanistan? Indeed, I ask that you please consider all this and think on it, and if you have any other suggestions, please feel free to email me.
